Built in four phases between 1908 and 1925, the Kaufman Lofts property is a former factory-turned-residential Heritage building with a rich history in downtown Kitchener. However, the building had fallen into disrepair, with residents battling falling concrete, water leaks, and a tired façade. To add to the complexity, the property is adjacent to the light rail transit system in downtown Kitchener.
The Board of Directors retained Edison's expertise to oversee the rehabilitation of the building, with the goal of addressing repairs, rejuvenating the façade, and maintaining the Heritage elements of the original construction. We coordinated with City and Heritage officials through the permit process, and worked in collaboration to design repairs that would preserve the fabric of the façade while improving durability. A great example of this is the design of discreet window sill drip flashings. These are difficult to spot if you don't know to look for them, but they will provide incredible protection to the façade from running water for years to come.
With no disruption to the regional light rail transit system, we completed the restoration of one of Kitchener's famed Heritage buildings which has improved the overall aesthetic of the city's downtown core while also addressing long-term comfort and pride of Owners and residents of Kaufman Lofts.
